By far one of the biggest energy saving tips has to be insulating a loft.
And the good news is you can do it yourself and save a lot of money.
There are
grants available too, so find out if you can get one, it may cover
the whole cost.
When insulating a loft, a depth of at least 6inches (150mm)
was
recommended. In many older properties, shallow joists in lofts restrict
depth for loose-fill insulation, but the most common type of loft
installation is the roll.
The
days have gone when a dangerous loft insulation was used, and these days a
more safer product know by the trade as "Rockwool" is used. With depths of
insulation ever increasing the government’s current recommendation
allow for a minimum 10” (250mm) thickness of insulation which could
reduce heating costs by around twenty five percent.

Check out all your local DIY stores to find a good price, and remember
safety first, don't kill yourself doing this job. Wear a suitable dust mask
to avoid throat irritation and protective gloves to prevent irritation to
the hands. And don't use a torch, use a proper lighting fitment so you can
see clearly what your doing.
