Free Range Eggs

Come on, lets face it free range eggs are produced by a much more contented hen than battery hens. However in the UK free range does not necessary mean the birds are wandering about farmyards or woodland areas, they could spend a great deal of time inside a barn or hen house, but do have access to runs. Up to 2,500 birds are allowed in just over two acres.

Organic eggs must come from free range birds fed only on organic food and reared on organic land. They must not be fed growth promoting products. Eggs with the lion mark are processed and packed under strict hygiene standards, but not necessary free range.

The eggs should have a number on the shell, free range have the 1 followed by a code for the country and a five digit code for producer. Organic eggs have a 0, barn eggs a 2 and caged eggs a 3.
