Genetically Modified (GM)

Cows Dance on Sainsbury's Roof to launch National actions against GM animal feed. GM, is currently fed to the cows that produce their dairy products, as well as to the cattle and pigs. However there is no labelling to alert shoppers.

Long lasting, genetically modified tomatoes came on to the market in 1994 and were the first genetically modified food available to consumers. The genetically modified tomato produces less of the substance that causes tomatoes to rot.

Genetically modified food products are plants that have had their genetic characteristics altered. Scientists change the plants' characteristics by putting new genetic material into them, genes for example from a bacteria which can withstand pesticides.

One way to genetically  modify a plant is to use a soil bacterium called agrobacteria tumefaciens. These bacteria infect plants, once inside the plant's cells, the bacteria wedge some of their own genes into the plant's genetic material.

Another way is to use a gene gun which fires tiny gold particles coated with genes directly into a plant's cells.

Many people object to genetically  modified plants because it can lead to unnatural organisms and could also make super weeds or damage the environment.
