Water (H2O)

Water is made from the two most common elements in the Universe, consisting of just two hydrogen atoms attached to a single oxygen atom.

Water is taken from a variety of both natural and manmade resources including rivers and lakes and reservoirs and transported via pipes to the treatment works where the water is cleaned and bacteria killed with Chlorine.

Chlorine is used in the making of computers and blood bags, and is also found in the skin of the Ecuadorian tree frog. (Bet you didn't know that)

Drinking water chlorination is one of the most widely used methods to safeguard drinking water supplies. But Despite the high quality of mains water in the UK, many people treat their water, using water softeners, filters, and scale reducers.

Dissolved chalk, lime and other minerals find their way into our water, and filters can remove these unwanted properties. Hard water can also damage electrical appliances, a washing machine or electric kettle can soon "Fur" up with a lime coating making the appliance less efficient and leading to permanent damage.

Rainwater is naturally soft, but as it runs through chalk and limestone it dissolves and collects these minerals. The hardness of the supply of mains water to your home is dependant on where you live and whether the supply is river or ground water.
