kettles are much more efficient than boiling water on a gas stove, too much
heat is lost with gas, and they don't switch themselves off when boiled. The
electric kettle has some safety features, which may start to go wrong after
a few years of use. Again one of the biggest problems is the heating
elements get furred up with lime. Use a de-scaler regular, and if there is a
removable filter, take it out and soak that in de-scaler too.
There are stainless steal wire mesh balls you can drop into kettles which
suppose to keep the scale off the elements, they work but need replacing
regular. If there is a build up of lime, it can also cause the kettle to
switch off before its boiled, or switch off early.
The kettle will have a thermostat which is preset to switch off when the
water is boiling, if it gets clogged up it wont work correctly. When you buy
a new kettle, try to get one where the heating elements are not exposed,
this will keep the scale off the elements.
To save money, only fill the kettle with enough water that you need.
Always switch it off at the wall socket before you touch the kettle and
never get the outside of the kettle or base wet.
