Wall paper that's been on a while takes some scrapping to remove, the old
way was to use a sponge and hot water to soak it first, then scrape it off.
This meant a lot of water splashed everywhere, including into the light
switches and sockets. The paper stripper works like an electric kettle,
but keeps the water boiling all the time. With the water boiling steam is
generated which travels up the long plastic pipe and into the flat plate
which is held against the wall. Like any machine that has a heating element,
you need to use a lime cleaner occasionally, those designed for electric
kettles will work fine. When using these strippers, you really need to
practice, if you move the head away to early, the paper wont be lifted, but
if you stay to long in one location not only will you lift the paper, you
will also lift the wall plaster as well. It will help to score the
wall before using one of these, this will help the steam get into the paper,
so use a scraper and scratch the paper taking care not to go too deep and
scratch the wall. Heat rises, so its better if you start at the bottom of
a wall, and slowly work your way up, return to the bottom again and do the
same. Ideally you use the steamer in one hand, while scraping away with the
other hand.
