Which Vaccine

  • Which Vaccine to use
Two authorised brands of rabies vaccine are currently on the UK market: Rabisin and Nobivac. Rabies vaccines will now be made freely available to vets. This means that MAFF authorisation to purchase and use rabies vaccines will no longer be required.
  • When to vaccinate
An animal must be at least three months old before it is vaccinated. Vaccination can take place any time after the animal has been fitted with a microchip. Before administering the rabies vaccine, the vet must check to confirm that the animal is identifiable by a permanent number microchip implant.
  • Boosters
After an animal has been vaccinated against rabies, it must be given booster vaccinations.
  • Record
When the animal is vaccinated, the administering vet must record these details on the vaccination record card:
  1. Date of vaccination
  2. The animal's date of birth and age
  3. Microchip number and date of insertion
  4. Due date of next vaccination (or booster)
  5. Vaccine product name
  6. Batch number
